A memory brought out after reading Basil's issue with his external hard drive (literal) crash:

As a young budding photojournalist with a new Miranda G, it was always close to hand. On one occasion it was sitting on a desk, neck strap hung over the edge. Someone said in an excited voice: "You gotta SEE this!" On gripping the lens to take the camera with me, the strap caught on a drawer pull and yanked the camera from my grip, slamming it to the floor. Camera inop and lost to a repair process for weeks. Plus expense. From that point on the straps were wound around the lens any time a camera equipped with one was set down ANYWHERE.

The owner of a camera store recently told me that he takes the straps off every used camera he sells because if he leaves them on someone will catch something in the strap and the camera will hit the floor.
